Demographic and Clinical Profile of Oesophageal Varices Patients in Wahidin Sudirohudo Hospital Makassar-Indonesia

ABSTRACT
Background: Patients with esophageal varices increased risk of bleeding and even death, but rates of bleeding and mortality are vary greatly. (1) The presence of oesophageal varices correlates with the severity of liver disease. About 4-30% of patients with small varices can be develop to be large varices each year and will be risk of bleeding. (2) Oesophageal Varices Bleeding (OVB) is a complication with high mortality in patients with cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to assess a clinical profile of oesopgael varices patient that risk factors for in-hospital death in patients with OVB. (3) So that data collection on the clinical profile of patients with esophageal varices is needed, so that a strategy can be made to prevent the occurrence of varicose veins.
Methods: A retrospective database analysis study from oesophageal varices patients diagnosed between 2016-2020 in Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital was conducted. Information on patient’s demography, symptoms, lifestyle, laboratory, and endoscopy were collected.
Results: According to the data that we analyze, 110 (83,3%) male, age in interval 46-60 years old (41,7%) patients with median age 52 years old, and 58 (43,9%) patients with normal BMI. Symptoms of oesophageal varices are stomach pain 89 (65,4%), bloating 45 (33,1%), vomiting 38 (27,9 %), early satiety 37 (27,2%), weight loss 34 (25%), diarrhea 32(23,5%), heart burn 31(22,8%), nausea 26(19,1%), constipation 10 (7,4%).
Conclusion: Profile of oesophageal varices patient in Wahidin Sudirohusodo were mainly elderly, men, normal BMI, and the most common symptom by patients with oesophageal varices are stomach pain, bloating and vomiting.
